The discussion will include fundamentals of microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis. This workshop is ideal for first time MTC attendees, those new to the field of membrane technology, or anyone wanting to refresh their knowledge on the basics of membrane processes. This workshop is organized by the AWWA Membrane Processes and Research Committee.
PCW02 – Advancements in Potable Reuse: Navigating California’s Reuse Landscape
8:30 am – 12:00 pm | Member: $175 | Non-member: $250
This workshop highlights California’s latest advancements in potable reuse. The workshop will explore topics such as regulatory requirements for indirect and direct potable reuse, water reliability and quality monitoring, advancements in membrane pretreatment and enhanced RO technologies, and operator certification essentials. You will engage with experts, researchers, and industry leaders to stay informed about California’s journey toward sustainable water solutions. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in the latest developments in potable reuse in California. This workshop is organized by the Reuse and Desalination Committee of the AWWA California-Nevada Section.
PCW03 – Desalination of Seawater
1:00 pm – 4:30 pm | Member: $175 | Non-member: $250
“Desalination of Seawater” provides an overview of seawater desalination based on the latest AWWA Manual of Practice M61 – Desalination of Seawater. The workshop will include an overview of desalination in the United States and globally and will cover topics such as treatment technologies, environmental impacts, procurement approaches, operations and maintenance, and the cost of desalination. The workshop is intended for anyone considering seawater as a water supply alternative, or anyone curious how the implementation of seawater desalination differs from other drought-proof water supply alternatives. This workshop is organized by the AWWA Desalination Committee.
PCW04 – Membrane Water Treatment System Operations
1:00 pm – 4:30 pm | Member: $175 | Non-member: $250
“Membrane Water Treatment System Operations” will focus on the day-to-day operations of membrane water and wastewater treatment systems, including options available to plant operators for membrane system optimization and performance maintenance of MBR, MF/UF and NF/RO installations. The workshop will include case studies of resolving unexpected upsets. This workshop is organized by the Southwest Membrane Operators Association (SWMOA).
Facility Tours
Facility tours do require separate registration and and additional fee.
Facility Tour – Monday, Feb. 24, 2025
T1 – OCWD Groundwater Replenishment System
8:00 am – 12:00 pm | Member: $70 | Non-member: $105
The Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) is the world’s largest water purification system for indirect potable reuse. The system, which has a capacity of 130 mgd, purifies treated wastewater using a three-step advanced treatment process consisting of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and advanced oxidation using ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide. The purified water, which previously would have been discharged into the Pacific Ocean as treated wastewater, is recharged into local groundwater to create a seawater intrusion barrier and increase the local drinking water supply. The GWRS is a joint partnership between the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San).
T2 – Signal Hill Well #9 and the Goldsworthy Desalter
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Member: $70 | Non-member: $105
Tour T2 will visit a reverse osmosis desalination facility for treating brackish groundwater for a drinking water supply. This tour is recommended for conference attendees who are interested in something other than potable reuse. The Goldsworthy desalter is 5 mgd RO facility that treats brackish groundwater from the West Coast Groundwater Basin. The treated water is used as potable water in the City of Torrance.
T3 – WRD Albert Robles Center for Water Recycling & Environmental Learning (ARC)
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. | Member: $70 | Non-member: $150
The Albert Robles Center (ARC) for Water Recycling & Environmental Learning has a 14.8 mgd indirect potable reuse advanced treatment facility consisting of ultrafiltration, three-stage reverse osmosis achieving greater than 90% recovery, and advanced oxidation using ultraviolet light and chlorine. The purified water is discharged into the Montebello Forebay Spreading Grounds to recharge the local water supply aquifer. The ARC also has a fully digital Learning Center and a water-efficient Demonstration Garden that will be part of the tour. The ARC is owned by the Water Replenishment District.
T4 – MWD Pure Water Innovation Center and Terminal Island AWPF
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. | Member: $70 | Non-member: $150
Tour T4 will visit two nearby potable reuse facilities. The Grace F. Napolitano Pure Water Southern California Innovation Center is a 0.5 mgd demonstration plant with a three-step advanced treatment process consisting of membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, and advanced oxidation using ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite. When expanded to full scale, Pure Water Southern California could produce up to 150 million gallons of purified water daily, enough to meet the daily needs of 1.5 million people. After visiting the Pure Water Innovation Center, the tour will visit Terminal Island’s Advanced Water Purification Facility, a 12 mgd facility that consists of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and advanced oxidation with ultraviolet light and sodium hypochlorite. The purified water flows to the Dominguez Gap Saltwater Intrusion Barrier and Valero Refinery to be used as cooling water.
