AWWA marks fifth annual Source Water Protection Week

Olympic rower champions healthy waterways

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) invites water utilities, consumers, and community partners to join in the fifth annual Source Water Protection Week, Sept. 28–Oct. 4. The campaign’s theme, “Protect the Source,” emphasizes that safe, reliable water begins with protecting rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater.

Throughout the week, AWWA and partners will share resources, case studies, and examples of how communities are protecting their drinking water sources. A downloadable toolkit offers social media graphics, infographics, and one-page resources, along with templates and tips for local outreach.

“Assuring safe, clean, drinking water begins with protecting our lakes, waterways and groundwater, and everyone has a role to play,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “When water consumers, businesses, farmers and community leaders come together to protect drinking water at its source, we’re protecting public health and strengthening our communities for generations to come. Who doesn’t want that!”

For this year’s campaign, AWWA is partnering with U.S. Olympic rower Aquil Abdullah to share social media videos about the importance of protecting waterways for athletes and communities. Throughout the week, Abdullah’s videos will explore the connection between safe drinking water and healthy water sources, like the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

“As an Olympian, I’ve spent much of my life on the water,” said Abdullah. “Clean water and healthy rivers aren’t just essential for sport — they’re essential for life. I’m proud to partner with AWWA to highlight the importance of protecting our source waters for future generations.”

The campaign supports programs that protect drinking water sources such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs and groundwater from pollution, which is the most effective and least expensive way to keep drinking water safe and healthy. It also seeks to foster collaboration and partnerships with various stakeholders, including agriculture, forest management, local businesses and land developers.
