Operator CEU Approvals per State
AWWA offers Certificates of Completion for our educational programs.
Regardless of your profession, certificates of completion can support your career. We partner with many operator licensing agencies to provide continuing education for water operators. While this page is specific to operators, you can learn more about certificates of completion in general at awwa.org/credits.
Choose your state or province from the dropdown menu to explore approved operator education!

Certificates of Completion By State
Alabama
Alabama’s ADEM will generally accept most AWWA Certificates of Completion. Per the ADEM website:
“ADEM does not pre-approve training courses and has no control over the training content or of the posting of any material on these websites…It is the Operator’s responsibility to identify valid CEH classes that are appropriate for the operator’s individual level or grade of certification.”
eLearning Courses
Alabama does not pre-approve continuing education programs; instead, operators should submit their AWWA eLearning Certificates of Completion to ADEM for credit. View our course catalog at awwa.org/eLearning.

Hawaii
The State of Hawaii DOH Safe Drinking Water Branch (SDWB) will accept most AWWA programs for continuing education. This includes webinars, eLearning courses, and in-person events. The State maintains a short list of approved programs here. For programs not listed, SDWB asks that operators verify CEU approval with SDWB prior to enrolling.
Idaho
As of July 1, 2024, the Idaho Board of Drinking Water & Wastewater Professionals no longer reviews and approves continuing education courses for drinking water and wastewater operators. Per the state, as long as the course content is germane to the license type, it is acceptable as continuing education for licensees. This applies to both in-person and online programs.
Thus, most AWWA programs will be accepted for CE Hours in Idaho.
Illinois
Illinois EPA will accept AWWA webinars without an IEPA number. Other program types (eLearning courses and in-person events) are assigned an IEPA number.
The AWWA programs listed are approved for operator CEUs in Illinois.

After attending an AWWA webinar, operators should download the Illinois Operator Training Submission Form pdf and submit it along with their certificate of attendance and a brief course description, agenda, or webinar presentation slide deck. Per IEPA, leave the ‘Course ID’ field blank for webinars, and submit the form along with the supporting documents to the IEPA.

1 TC – Training Credit
1 TH – Training Hour
*AWWA Certificates of Completion will download in CEU, along with a conversion to hours noted. Your agency should be familiar with this concept and can convert to any necessary metric.
