Drinking Water Week highlights people and systems behind tap water

Communities across North America will celebrate Drinking Water Week May 3–9, as the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its many partners continue a longstanding tradition of recognizing the vital role of safe and reliable drinking water.

This annual observance fosters appreciation for the often-unseen work behind delivering healthy tap water and strengthens public understanding of the role water systems play in supporting communities and sustaining daily life.

“An extraordinary amount of care and expertise goes into every glass of tap water,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “Drinking Water Week shines a spotlight on the people and systems that protect public health and support the daily activities people depend on, from brushing your teeth in the morning to cooking meals for a family dinner at the end of the day.”

Water utilities and local governments mark Drinking Water Week through community events, educational outreach, facility tours and storytelling that make the value of tap water more visible. AWWA encourages everyone to take part in the celebration. Some ways to participate include:

  • Learning more about where your drinking water comes from and how it is treated
  • Thanking water professionals for the essential work they do every day
  • Participating in local utility events, such as tours, open houses or educational activities
  • Sharing stories and resources that celebrate the value of tap water

Throughout the week, AWWA will share educational content and stories highlighting water professionals. Participants can find campaign materials and ways to get involved on AWWA’s Drinking Water Week webpage and join the conversation on social media using #DrinkingWaterWeek.
