AWWA encourages communities to “Protect the Source” during Source Water Protection Week
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) invites water utilities and communities to join in the sixth annual Source Water Protection Week, Sept. 27-Oct. 3. The campaign’s theme, “Protect the Source,” highlights the importance of safeguarding rivers, lakes, reservoirs and groundwater as the first step in providing safe, reliable drinking water.
Protecting sources of drinking water helps control water treatment costs and leads to healthier water at the tap. Source water protection programs take many forms, including spill prevention and response planning, public education, and partnerships to address pollution upstream.
“The quality of our natural water sources affects everyone,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “Keeping pollution out of those waters in the first place is the most effective way to protect your drinking water. When water utilities, community leaders, businesses and residents all work together to protect our local waters, everybody benefits. Remember, your water starts at the source!”
Throughout the week, AWWA and its partners will share stories spotlighting source water protection efforts across North America and provide resources to help consumers learn more and get involved. Downloadable campaign materials include social media graphics, educational videos, consumer resources, a proclamation template and additional tools for water utilities and community partners.
AWWA encourages everyone to learn more about where their drinking water comes from and the role we all play in protecting it. More information about Source Water Protection Week and 2026 campaign materials are available at awwa.org/swpw.
