Students & Young Professionals
AWWA Mentorship Program
Why Join the Mentorship Program?
Applications for fall 2026 are now closed. Applications for spring 2027 will open in November, 2026.
Students and young professionals (age 35 and under) have the opportunity to build a relationship with a water industry expert while exploring careers in water and association engagement. Mentors get to help lift up future water community leaders and nurture the field they are in, simply by showing a younger generation all the work they do for the water sector.
How To Join the Program
Students & YPs (Mentees)
Students and YPs select their mentor at the beginning of each session with the intention to accomplish a set goal that they set as a team. Whether that goal is to learn more about various careers in water, improve upon a skill, figure out what skill you want to add to your resume or further your knowledge about a particular topic in water.
Students and YPs need to meet with their mentors at least once a month to gain guidance to accomplish the set goal and successfully complete this mentorship.
Requirements:
- Must be EITHER an active student from a University/College/Community College OR a young professional age 35 and under.
- Must be an AWWA member by the beginning of the program.
Applications for fall program are now open.
Mentors
Students and young professionals are paired with mentors at the beginning of each session with the intention to accomplish a set goal that they set as a team. That goal can be to explore various careers in water, help mentees improve upon a skill, discover what to add to their resume, or further their knowledge about a particular topic in water. Mentors have experience and skills to share that will be valuable to any student even if their area of expertise is different from the student’s area of study. The effort is minimal for the huge impact you will make on your mentee. Meet a minimum of once a month for the length of your cohort – that’s it! If you want to go further, that’s your choice.
Sign up today to give back to your community with only five meetings.
Mentors must be AWWA members by the time the program begins.

“I recently had a fantastic experience participating in the American Water Works Association (AWWA) student mentorship program as a mentee. This initiative is an incredible opportunity for students in the water industry to develop and refine the essential skills needed to launch a successful career in this sector.”
