Statement on inclusion of microplastics, pharmaceuticals on draft Contaminant Candidate List
In a public event on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the proposed Sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL) under the Safe Drinking Water Act. AWWA CEO David LaFrance issued the following statement.
The Safe Drinking Water Act establishes a clear, science‑based process for identifying contaminants of concern, collecting national occurrence data, and determining whether a federal drinking water standard presents a meaningful opportunity for risk reduction. EPA’s decision to add microplastics and pharmaceuticals to the draft Contaminant Candidate List reflects growing public concern about substances that are ubiquitous in the environment. AWWA appreciates the Department of Health and Human Services’ recognition of the many information gaps associated with microplastics and the commitment of research funding to begin filling those gaps. AWWA looks forward to collaborating with its members, the research community, and EPA on the best path forward to assure safe drinking water and protect public health.
