Statement from AWWA and AMWA on Oral Arguments in PFAS Petition

American Water Works Association (AWWA) CEO David LaFrance and Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) Interim CEO Dan Hartnett released the following statement today as oral arguments begin in the organizations’ petition for judicial review of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS):

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) appreciate the opportunity to present oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in our petition for judicial review of EPA’s PFAS drinking water regulation.

AWWA and AMWA remain committed to protecting public health and helping EPA develop rules using the rigorous, science-based framework set forth in the Safe Drinking Water Act. The SDWA process is designed to incorporate public comments, ensure the best data is used for assessing potential risks, and arrive at a regulation that is feasible and affordable to implement.

Water systems are making significant operational, financial, and infrastructure decisions related to PFAS. We are hopeful the court will issue a timely decision on the petition so local water systems, regulators, and consumers can move forward with confidence in managing PFAS risks.
