AWWA solicits public comments on all proposed new AWWA Standards, and on all proposed revisions, reaffirmations, or withdrawals of existing AWWA Standards. The referenced standards project is being considered for approval and the publication of this notice begins the 45-day public comment period for AWWA and ANSI. An electronic public review copy of the proposed standard can be obtained for review during the comment period by emailing ETS Support (ETSsupport@awwa.org). Comments must be submitted in writing to the AWWA contact listed below no later than the last day of the comment period specified herein. Such comments shall be specific to the section(s) of the standard under review and include sufficient detail, so as to enable the reader to understand the commenter’s position, concerns and suggested alternative language, if appropriate.

The review copy will be edited for publication and may also be revised as appropriate based on any comments received during the public comment period. Therefore, this copy is not suitable for continued utilization and is intended only for comment purposes.

Final publication of the standard may take several months. When it is available, a notice will be published in the official notice section of Journal – American Water Works Association. The standard becomes an effective AWWA standard on the first day of the month following such publication in Journal – American Water Works Association.

SCOPE
This standard describes the materials and procedures for rehabilitation of existing pressurized water pipelines 4 in. (100 mm) to 36 in. (900 mm) in diameter using pipe bursting. Pressurized water pipeline materials that can be pipe burst include asbestos cement, cast iron, ductile iron, fiberglass, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plastic, reinforced concrete, and steel.

MAJOR REVISIONS
Major changes made in this revision of ANSI/AWWA C622 are as follows:

  1. The title was changed from Potable Water Mains to Pressurized Water Mains to be inclusive of reclaimed water and wastewater. Potable was changed to pressurized in the Scope, Purpose, and Application sections as well (Sec. 1.1 – Sec. 1.3).
  2. The term replacement pipe was changed to new pipe throughout, and a definition for new pipe was added to Sec. 3. The term host pipe was changed to existing pipe throughout, including Section 3; the existing definition was retained.
  3. Clarified that the new pipe is structurally independent and added a new section for structural design requirements (Foreword I.A., Sec. 3, and Sec. 4.3.1).
  4. A new item was added to Purchaser Options and Alternatives for the purchaser to provide the standard or manual applicable for design and installation of new pipe (Foreword III.A.).
  5. A new item was added to Purchaser Options and Alternatives for the purchaser to provide the standard or manual applicable for pressure testing based on type of new pipe, and the Pressure Testing section was clarified in this regard (Foreword III.A. and Sec. 5.1).
  6. Regulatory considerations for pipe bursting asbestos cement pipe were added (Foreword II.F.)
  7. Several new reference documents were added throughout and to the References section (Sec. 2).
  8. Definitions for reclaimed water and wastewater were added, and the definition for gouge (gouging) was broadened. The definition for expander was clarified to include alternate terms bursting head or cone-shaped head (Sec. 3).
  9. New footnote added to Permeation section to reference hydrocarbons research (Sec. 4.1).
  10. Clarified that only materials for pipe bursting potable mains need comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act since reclaimed water and wastewater were added (Sec. 4.2.1).
  11. Clarified Materials and Workmanship sections with new subsections (Sec. 4.2.1 and Sec. 4.2.2).
  12. Deleted certification statement as this is jurisdictional and already covered in Foreword, III.A.
  13. Clarified gouging limit checks and compliance (Sec. 4.2.2.3).
  14. Clarifications were added for locating and protecting other utility and service lines (Sec. 4.3.4).
  15. A new subsection was added regarding support and protection of new pipe during pulling process (Sec. 4.4.4 and Sec. 4.5.3).
  16. Revised requirements for existing pipe assessment before pipe bursting (Sec. 4.4.7).
  17. Replaced absolute storage time limit with manufacturer’s recommended time (Sec. 4.4.8).
  18. Deleted CCTV inspection records from quality control documentation (Sec. 4.4.10).
  19. The title of Section 4.7.2 was revised to ‘Disinfecting potable water pipe’, and a new section for Bacteriological Testing for Potable Water Pipelines was added (Sec. 5.3).
