AWWA COMMENT PERIOD ON AWWA C228, Stainless-Steel Pipe Flange Joints for Water Service—Sizes 2 In. Through 72 In. (50 mm Through 1,800 mm)

AWWA solicits public comments on all proposed new AWWA Standards, and on all proposed revisions, reaffirmations, or withdrawals of existing AWWA Standards. The referenced standards project is being considered for approval and the publication of this notice begins the 45-day public comment period for AWWA and ANSI. An electronic public review copy of the proposed standard can be obtained for review during the comment period by emailing ETS Support (ETSsupport@awwa.org). Comments must be submitted in writing to the AWWA contact listed below no later than the last day of the comment period specified herein. Such comments shall be specific to the section(s) of the standard under review and include sufficient detail, so as to enable the reader to understand the commenter’s position, concerns and suggested alternative language, if appropriate.

The review copy will be edited for publication and may also be revised as appropriate based on any comments received during the public comment period. Therefore, this copy is not suitable for continued utilization and is intended only for comment purposes.

Final publication of the standard may take several months. When it is available, a notice will be published in the official notice section of Journal – American Water Works Association. The standard becomes an effective AWWA standard on the first day of the month following such publication in Journal – American Water Works Association.

SCOPE
This standard describes stainless-steel, ring-type, slip-on flanges and blind flanges for use in conjunction with stainless-steel pipe used in facilities of waterworks service.

MAJOR REVISIONS
Major revisions made to the standard in this edition include the following:

  • Updated Sec. I.C. Acceptance in the Foreword with the latest Standards Council language reflecting the addition of reference to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 600.
  • Revised Sec. II. Special Issues in the Foreword to match the wording used in AWWA C207 for consistency.
  • Added “gasket ID” to Purchasers Options in III.A, Item 7 of the Foreword.
  • Added a reference to AWWA M11 in Sec. 1.3 Application.
  • Sec. 1.3.3 Flange design was revised.
  • The terms “Reclaimed water” and “Wastewater” were added to Section 3, Definitions.
  • Updated Sec. 4.1.1 Materials and Sec. 4.1.2 Permeation with the latest Standards Council boilerplate language.
  • Revised Sec. 4.1.4 Fasteners for clarity and consistency with AWWA C207.
  • Revised wording to improve clarity pertaining to gasket assembly stress value in Sec. 4.1.5.
  • Corrected wording at the bottom of Table 2 pertaining to dimensions in common with Class 125 gray iron flanges and ASME 16.5 150 psi flanges.
  • Corrected wording at the bottom of Table 3 pertaining to dimensions in common with the flanges in this table.
  • Bolt diameter for 22 in. flange in Table 3 corrected to 1.50 in.
  • Added the AWWA C207 Appendix A Bibliography with the addition of the 2009 ASCE Pipelines Bambei and Green paper as a new Appendix A.
  • Added Appendix B Post-fabrication Cleaning of Stainless Steels from AWWA C231 as a new Appendix B
