SCOPE
This standard describes 1-in. (25-mm) through 12-in. (300-mm) air valve and vent inflow preventer assemblies designed for use on the outlet of potable water distribution system air valves furnished in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C512 or storage facility vent pipes. The assemblies shall have a minimum design pressure of 25 psig (172.4 kPa [gauge]) and prevent the entry of contaminated water between 0 and 57.7 ft (17.6 m) of submergence at liquid temperatures ranging from 32°F (0°C) to a maximum of 125°F (52°C).
MAJOR REVISIONS
Major revisions made to the standard in this edition include the following:
- Removed references to ASTM D747 since it has been withdrawn without replacement by ASTM (Section 2 and Section 3, item 9).
- Removed references to ASTM F593 and separate requirement for stainless steel bolts (Section 2 and Sec. 4.2.2.5).
- Where a metric version of an ASTM referenced standard exists but was not included, the “M” version of the designation was added throughout (e.g., A240/A240M).
- Expanded stainless steel types and grades, including addition of the low-carbon version of the cast materials (Sec. 4.2.2.4).
- Added qualification criteria to the General Requirements section for welding, including Section IX, Part A of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, AWS D1.1/D1.1M, or AWS D1.6/D1.6M (Section 2 and Sec. 4.4.1).
- Clarified that the shell test is to be conducted on each inflow preventer assembly (Sec. 5.1.1).
- Clarified purchaser options in cases of noncompliance (Sec. 5.3).
- Added requirement that the minimum after-delivery storage conditions be readily available to the purchaser (Sec. 6.2).
- Clarified manufacturer sample requirements for laboratory testing and reporting (Sec. 6.3.1.1 and Sec. 6.3.1.2).
- Added clarifications to the Installation and Field Testing sections of Appendix A.
