American Water Works Association kicks off annual Drinking Water Week celebration

For more than 40 years, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its partners across North America have proudly celebrated Drinking Water Week, and today marks the beginning of the 2025 observance. From May 4-10, communities will recognize the vital role of safe and reliable drinking water while spotlighting the expertise and dedication of water professionals.

This year’s Drinking Water Week aims to deepen public understanding and appreciation of the people, science and infrastructure that work together to deliver safe tap water to homes and businesses every day.

“Drinking Water Week is an opportunity for tap water to get a well-deserved moment in the sun,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “It’s a moment to step back and appreciate something we often take for granted: the clean, healthy water that sustains our communities. It’s also a time to acknowledge the skilled water professionals who, often behind the scenes, ensure this vital resource is always available to you.”

AWWA encourages everyone – water utilities, local governments, consumers, schools and all water stakeholders – to participate in Drinking Water Week. Some opportunities for engagement include:

  • Engage in local utility activities: Discover what your water utility is doing to celebrate Drinking Water Week. Many host events or offer educational resources.
  • Learn about drinking water: Explore water at its source and learn from your water utility how it’s treated and delivered.
  • Thank a water professional: Acknowledge the essential work water professionals accomplish to safeguard water and community well-being.
  • Speak up for water: Get involved in community efforts to conserve water and advocate for investment in water infrastructure.

Throughout the week, AWWA will share educational resources about drinking water and stories highlighting water professionals. To find ways to participate, visit the Drinking Water Week page. For downloadable campaign assets, visit the materials page. Participants can engage with the campaign on social media by using the hashtag #DrinkingWaterWeek.
