AWWA solicits public comments on all proposed new AWWA Standards, and on all proposed revisions, reaffirmations, or withdrawals of existing AWWA Standards. The referenced standards project is being considered for approval and the publication of this notice begins the 45-day public comment period for AWWA and ANSI. An electronic public review copy of the proposed standard can be obtained for review during the comment period by emailing ETS Support (ETSsupport@awwa.org). Comments must be submitted in writing to the AWWA contact listed below no later than the last day of the comment period specified herein. Such comments shall be specific to the section(s) of the standard under review and include sufficient detail, so as to enable the reader to understand the commenter’s position, concerns and suggested alternative language, if appropriate.

Final publication of the standard may take several months. When it is available, a notice will be published in the official notice section of Journal – American Water Works Association. The standard becomes an effective AWWA standard on the first day of the month following such publication in Journal – American Water Works Association.

SCOPE
This standard describes reduced-wall, resilient-seated gate valves with non-rising stems (NRS) and outside screw-and-yoke (OS&Y) rising stems, including tapping gate valves, for water supply service having a temperature range of 33° to 125°F (0.6° to 52°C).

MAJOR REVISIONS
Major revisions made to the standard in this edition include the following:

1. Revised the maximum compression set value for rubber-seat compounds based on larger valve sizes now covered, modern seat materials, and current industry tolerances (Sec. 4.2.4.12, Item 4).
2. Changed Table 11 to Table 1 and deleted previous Table 1. Both referred to stem design torque. Revised the torque values to reflect the values derived in ANSI/AWWA C500, including a safety factor of 1.5 for sizes 36 in. through 72 in.
3. For Bolting section 4.4.4, deleted mechanical strength requirement from ASTM A307 and replaced with a minimum tensile strength requirement. Deleted all references to ASTM A307 throughout.
4. Removed zinc-coated steel and general reference to corrosion resistance processes for fasteners due to ubiquitous use of stainless-steel fasteners unless otherwise required by purchaser (Sec. 4.4.4.1). Deleted ASTM A153 and ASTM B633 from References (Sec. 2).
5. Added clarifications for wrench nuts and handwheels and added allowance for coated steel for handwheels with an outside diameter greater than 16 in. (Sec. 4.4.7 and Sec. 4.4.8.6).
6. For Gearing section 4.4.8, a requirement was added to size the gear actuator to the full rated operating pressure of the valve.
7. Removed separate pinion of bronze for gears and removed ASTM A27 material compliance since gears may be made from wrought material (Sec. 4.4.8).
8. For Table 10, Gear ratios, added the 14 in. (350 mm) size with a 2:1 gear ratio.
9. Deleted minimum average dry film thickness value since the latest requirements in ANSI/AWWA C550 should be referenced (Sec. 4.5.2).
