Pre-Conference Workshops

UMC workshops provide in-depth, hands-on comprehensive learning opportunities. Workshop registrations do require a separate fee.

TUE01| WaterOpolis - The Value of Water…Issues and Choices
Tuesday, February 17
8:30 a.m. - Noon
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

The primary intent of this workshop is to introduce participants to a unique stakeholder engagement tool which can be used by utility organizations to engage stakeholders to openly discuss issues and choices regarding their own utility organizations. WaterOpolis is a live budget simulation that uses the industry's Effective Utility Management (EUM) framework. WaterOpolis is a perfect opportunity for attending Board Members, Commissioners, and Governing Body Representatives to engage with staff members (their own, or others) to discuss and debate the issues that must be balanced to plan and deliver utility services.

TUE02 | People are Talking - Are You Listening? Using Customer Research and Branding to Connect with Stakeholders
Tuesday, February 17
8:30 a.m. - Noon.
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

You agree that effective communicating - and connecting- with customers is important. Their support can make or break critical projects. But where do you begin? This interactive workshop will guide you through the steps in the process from research, to branding, and ultimately to strategic communications that deliver your messages in terms that resonate with your customers.

TUE03| Managing Design-Build Projects for the Water Infrastructure
Tuesday, February 17
8:30 a.m. - Noon
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

This workshop is a "problem-solving" interactive education session designed specifically for utility and agency managers involved in capital projects for the water infrastructure. Using real life scenarios (case-studies) attendees will work in small groups and experientially work through the essential steps to organize, contract for and manage a water infrastructure project using the design-build delivery method.

TUE04| Making Knowledge Management An Integral Component of Your Comprehensive Asset Management Program
Tuesday, February 17
1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

The AWWA Knowledge Management Subcommittee and the AWWA Asset Management Committee are sponsoring this workshop because it can be beneficial to "make knowledge management an integral part of a utility asset management program." This workshop will demonstrate the business value of treating knowledge as an asset and discuss approaches for leveraging your business and technical knowledge to make informed investment decisions as part of your asset management program and to address key issues in a timely manner, such as staff turnover. This workshop will combine case study presentations, interactive exercises, small group discussions and individual project development to achieve its aim.

TUE05| Aligning Objectives and Communicating Results: Tools to Help Water Utilities Save Water and Revenue
Tuesday, February 17
1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

Understanding and communicating the interplay between water use, conservation rates, and revenue can be a challenge for many utilities. The Environmental Finance Center and the Alliance for Water Efficiency have a suite of fare-free tools to assist water utilities in evaluating revenue, rates and resources. This workshop will include a discussion and demonstration of four tools designed to help the resource-limited financial savy utility manager.

TUE06| Implementing Sustainable Utility Management Practices to Provide Quality Service to Your Customers
Tuesday, February 17
1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
$110 early member | $130 after January 19, or nonmember

This workshop will provide tools for assessing your utility, prioritizing areas for improvement, and measuring progress toward your goals. The EUM assessment and improvement framework is a recognized best practice - built for utilities by utilities. Participants will get the chance to experience it for themselves and learn tools they can use to address real-world problems.
