New AWWA mapping tool streamlines knowledge sharing

The ability to share information and lessons learned across the water community is reaching a new level through an innovative water mapping tool recently released by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

New AWWA Mapping ResourceA prototype of the online AWWA Water Map, introduced during last week’s Source Water Protection Week, is freely accessible to the public. The interactive platform provides users the ability to explore water-related case studies across North America, as well as locate nearby AWWA conferences and get information about AWWA sections and regions.

A final version of the AWWA Water Map will be released in 2024 as a benefit to AWWA members.

The AWWA Water Map prototype includes a variety of helpful features, including:

  • Interactive elements: Users can customize their experience using filtering tools, search functions, map design elements, and table features to access case study materials tailored to their interests.
  • AWWA conferences: The prototype includes a page outlining upcoming AWWA conferences across North America.
  • Sections and regions: Users can select AWWA Water Map content specific to their specific section and region.

“Reading case studies about other water systems’ challenges and innovative solutions is inspiring,” said Stacey Armstrong, a projects manager with Watershed Committee of the Ozarks. “For example, source water protection approaches for each community are unique based on the local characteristics of the watershed. The case study overviews on the AWWA Water Map help tell the story of successful strides being made to protect water resources at a national level.”

Casey Rodriguez, water resources mapping specialist at AWWA, said the mapping resource was designed to make it easy for water professionals to find and learn from others in the water community.

“With a variety of customizable features, you can tailor your experience to your specific interests,” she said. “We hope it will become a valuable resource for our members.”
