What is an interesting project you’ve worked on? I most recently completed a new $6 million sports park with 12 pickleball courts, 6 soccer fields, 2 baseball fields and a 1.5-mile jogging trail. An interesting fun fact, this park has more than 15 miles of irrigation. The Michigan State University mascot, Sparty, attended our park dedication. Go Green!
What is one of your proudest accomplishments? Completing the replacement of more than 14,000 lead service lines.
How have you benefited from your AWWA membership? The professional connections, networking and friendship have all been priceless! I’m currently co-chair of the MI-AWWA DEI committee and a member of the AWWA Diversity & Member Inclusion Committee.
Describe your family and personal interests: I have a lovely fiancé, Noelia Ruiz. We have four kids and four grandchildren. As for my personal interests, I belong to a Corvette club, and I have a 2019 Black Matted Grand Sport Corvette. I enjoy being around my family and friends, cookouts (as I love to grill), playing cards and live music. I love to play golf, and I like to play pickleball. Lastly, I’m a HUGE Detroit Lions fan! I’m a season ticket holder, and I never miss a home game.
What would surprise people to know about you? I play the drums, and I used to have my own funk/rhythm & blues band.
What do you find rewarding about your work? Seeing the smiles on people’s faces, or the kind words of thanks for providing excellent drinking water and fire protection.
Why do you think young people should consider a career in water? There are so many opportunities for growth and success. I went from working in the field to managing water distribution systems to directing all public works for cities/townships. More importantly, you will be making a positive difference in your community and the world!
What do you think would help the water sector attract more young people into the water sector? More opportunities like the Connections Member Spotlight to highlight experiences! A stronger push for diversity, equity and inclusion within sections to showcase the opportunities for all. Also, supporting these efforts by investing in our committees so we can keep sharing and producing exciting opportunities in the water sector.
