AWWA solicits public comments on all proposed new AWWA Standards, and on all proposed revisions, reaffirmations, or withdrawals of existing AWWA Standards. The referenced standards project is being considered for approval and the publication of this notice begins the 45-day public comment period for AWWA and ANSI. An electronic public review copy of the proposed standard can be obtained for review during the comment period by emailing ETS Support (ETSsupport@awwa.org). Comments must be submitted in writing to the AWWA contact listed below no later than the last day of the comment period specified herein. Such comments shall be specific to the section(s) of the standard under review and include sufficient detail so as to enable the reader to understand the commenter’s position, concerns and suggested alternative language, if appropriate.

The review copy will be edited for publication and may also be revised as appropriate based on any comments received during the public comment period. Therefore, this copy is not suitable for continued utilization and is intended only for comment purposes.

Final publication of the standard may take several months. When it is available, a notice will be published in the official notice section of Journal – American Water Works Association. The standard becomes an effective AWWA standard on the first day of the month following such publication in Journal – American Water Works Association.


SCOPE

This standard describes sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems intended to minimize corrosion of interior submerged surfaces of steel water storage tanks.

This standard does not describe automatically or manually controlled impressed current systems.

MAJOR REVISIONS

The major revisions to this edition of the standard include the following:
1. A new Appendix section, Sec. A.9, has been added on Cathodic Protection Design Considerations for Water and Wastewater Treatment Applications (Sec. A.9).

2. In Foreword Sec. I.C, references to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 600 have been added, along with explanatory notes for these additions.

3. In Foreword Sec. III, information on the importance of ensuring proper operating parameters to effect maximum tank life has been added.

4. In Foreword Sec. III.A.1, item no. 9, clarifications have been made to temperature range and flow rate.

5. In Foreword Sec. III.A.1, item no. 10, the general condition of the protective coatings has been added.

6. In Foreword, Sec. III.A.2, item no. 1, a clarification on the bare steel surface to be protected 1 has been made.

7. In Foreword Sec. III.A.3, item no. 1, the language on ingress/egress to the tank and tank site has been modified.

8. In Sec. 4.1.2, item no. 7, the general condition of the protective coatings has been added.

9. In Sec. 4.3.1, a reference to the applicable requirements of ANSI/AWWA D107 has been added.

10. In Sec. 4.3.3, the language has been modified to include authoritative regulations for potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems.

11. In Sec. A.4.1.1, a clarification has been made to include dissimilar metal components below the MWL.

12. In Sec. A.4.1.1, an explanation has been made with respect to the scope of the standard and the application of dielectric coatings.
