How AWWA collects your information

We collect data based on information we collect through the use of our services and information you give us.

Information We Collect From Your Use of Services. You can visit many of our website pages anonymously, without providing any personal information. We automatically collect and store logs of non-personal electronic data, such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address, device, browser type, and online activity data. We use cookies and various technologies that are sent to your device when you visit our website. A cookie is a small file containing a string of characters that is sent to your computer when you visit a website. When you visit the website again, the cookie allows that site to recognize your browser. Cookies may store user preferences and other non-personal information. You can reset your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. By allowing us to use cookies, your experience on our website may be enhanced.

Information You Give Us. When you interact with AWWA, we may ask you to provide certain personal information voluntarily. AWWA restricts the collection of personal information to demographic characteristics which help us understand and better serve the interests and needs of our members, customers, and website visitors, and to information used in authorized transactions. If you choose not to provide the information requested, you may be unable to access and use certain services and content on our website or receive information we believe will be of interest to you.

Examples when AWWA may collect your personal information include:

  • Registering on our website.
  • Submitting forms or inquiries.
  • Purchasing or downloading AWWA products and services.
  • Submitting papers or abstracts for presentation at conferences.

Children. AWWA does not intentionally or knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13.  AWWA may sell products intended for use by children, but does not target its marketing, communications, or this website toward children.  If a child has provided AWWA with personally identifiable information, a parent or guardian of that child should contact AWWA at service@awwa.org  if they would like this information deleted from AWWA’s records.  AWWA will use all reasonable efforts to delete all of the child's information from AWWA’s records.

How AWWA uses your information

Improve Browsing Experience. AWWA utilizes some of the information collected to improve your experience on this website, such as automatically logging you into the site upon your return. We regularly review the non-identifying data to determine how we can improve your experience with the site, the services we offer, and troubleshoot any issues with the site.

Provide You Services. Some services require the use of personal information to determine appropriate access. Many of these services require an account and for you to be logged into the site as a way to verify appropriate security access. As an example, you must be logged in and a member to read full articles of Journal AWWA. Other services require information to complete operational activities such as shipping purchased products and responding to your questions/comments. AWWA publishes directories or rosters that may include personal information intended for member networking and operational purposes.

AWWA Marketing Purposes. We generally use your personal information for our own business and administrative purposes, such as, without limitation, responding to your questions or comments; identifying products, programs, and events that might interest you; tracking your membership and online purchases; and coordinating volunteer opportunities. Name, postal address, fax and phone numbers, email address, affiliations, job title, gender, age and other similar information is used by AWWA to understand its audiences and to offer member benefits and products to members, customers, and website visitors who we believe are likely to be interested in them.

Rental of Postal Mailing Lists. AWWA occasionally provides postal addresses collected from members and customers to third parties. Prior to AWWA’s agreeing to provide such information, the third party must provide AWWA with the exact intended use of the information and a sample of the mailing piece. AWWA's decision to provide postal addresses to a third party is based on the educational/informational nature of the mailing piece, whether it furthers AWWA's or its members’ and customers’ overall interests and whether it is consistent with AWWA's mission. AWWA does not rent to third parties telephone numbers, fax numbers or email addresses.

Information utilized by third parties

AWWA uses carefully selected third parties to provide certain services, including administrative support for certain activities such as, but without limitation, product purchases, payment processing, event registration, reservations, and broadcast email services. In connection with providing these services, we may share your information with these third parties, and when appropriate, law enforcement authorities. In addition, these third parties may collect certain personal information such as your name, postal address, telephone number, email address, and interests. Although we endeavor to select only reputable companies that share our commitment to user privacy, we are in no way responsible for the actions or policies of these third parties.

AWWA may from time to time provide personal contact information submitted voluntarily by members and customers, including attendees at AWWA events, to carefully selected third-party organizations and partners who may provide you with information on technical products and services related to your profession or that we believe furthers AWWA's or its members’ overall interests and is consistent with AWWA's mission.

In certain instances, we may also disclose your personal information when we have reason to believe that it is necessary to identify, contact, or bring legal action against persons or entities that may be causing injury to you, us, or others; as necessary to respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process; or to establish or exercise AWWA’s legal rights or defend against legal claims, or as otherwise required by law.

Credit/debit card account information. AWWA does not disclose credit or debit card information provided by members and customers. When members and customers choose to pay online using a credit or debit card, that information is processed directly through a third-party clearinghouse using appropriate security processes and data encryption. Member and customer credit and debit card information is not stored or maintained by AWWA.

Google Analytics.  AWWA uses a tool called “Google Analytics” to collect information about use of this website. Google Analytics collects anonymous information such as how often users visit this site, what pages they visit when they do so, and what other sites they used prior to coming to this site. We use the information from Google Analytics to improve our website. Google’s use of information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to this site is governed by the Google Analytics Terms of Use and the Google Privacy Policy. You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits to this site by disabling cookies on your browser.

Other websites. Our website contains links to third-party websites that are provided for your convenience. We do not endorse nor are we responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such sites.

Opting out/in

AWWA recognizes that AWWA members and customers may wish to limit AWWA's use of personal information, and that this decision may occur after such information is provided to AWWA, via our website or otherwise. To that end, members and customers may access this website and voluntarily update their account information at any time, including selecting communication preferences.  Members and customers may also contact Customer Service to update communication preferences.

Opting out of such communications can affect your receiving or learning about benefits of membership, receiving information and offers we believe will be of interest to you, and interacting with AWWA.

How AWWA responds to do not track signals

At this time American Water Works Association sites do not recognize automated browser signals regarding tracking mechanisms, which may include ‘do not track’ instructions. However, you can change your privacy preferences regarding the use of cookies and similar technologies through your browser. Blocking all cookies will affect your online experience and may prevent you from enjoying the full features offered. Please consult the ‘Help’ section of your browser for more information.
