Student Resources

What is a self-paced course?

Self-paced courses are delivered exclusively online, and progress is driven solely by the student. This format allows the student to move through course content at their own pace, taking into consideration the individual’s knowledge level and capacity.

Self-paced courses can be completed anytime during a 90-day period after registration. These courses may include presentations, pre-recorded audio, supporting articles, online learning activities, videos, quizzes and evaluations.

What is a facilitated course?

Facilitated courses are delivered exclusively online with some pacing, interaction and direction provided by a facilitator. These courses are delivered at set times during the year and comprise pre-recorded presentations, online learning activities, videos, quizzes and evaluations.

Recognized experts on a topic are available to regularly answer the students’ questions, grade homework and provide feedback on student progress via discussion boards and emails.

How do I register for an eLearning course?

A good place to start is the main eLearning page.

On the first tab, About, you will note the courses link. By clicking on this link, you will be directed to the listing of available courses and information on each. Once you have registered on our website, you will be able to purchase a course by clicking on the Add to Cart icon located within each course description.

Once you have added the course(s) you wish to purchase to your cart, on the right-hand side of the page you will see the Shopping Cart Summary, View Cart and Checkout icons. If you are ready to purchase the course(s), click the Checkout icon and you will be redirected to the checkout portion where you enter the necessary information and purchase the course(s).

When the transaction is complete, an email receipt will be sent to you giving details about where to login on the website so you may begin your course(s) immediately. You will need to read and agree to the User Agreement terms before you will be allowed to begin any course.

Can I earn CEUs for AWWA eLearning courses?

Yes. However, we ask that prior to taking any of the courses, you check with your state/province to ensure they approve the course for your specific licensing needs.

Many of our courses are pre-approved. Please use our CE Credit Request Form to verify any AWWA courses that you are considering.

How does AWWA calculate CE Credits?

1.0 CEU = 10 Contact Hours. 1 Contact Hour = 60 minutes of instruction.

Water Treatment Operator Certificate Program

Do I have to take the Level 1 or Course 1 before I can take the Level 2 or 3 or Course 2 or 3?

No. All courses within the water treatment and high tech operator programs cover different topics or the same topics in more depth- knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis or evaluation. Each course has its own audience, and its selection is dependent on the experience and knowledge of the individual taking the course.

What is the ABC Need-To-Know Criteria?

The Water Treatment Operator courses take into consideration the Association of Boards of Certification Need-To-Know Criteria for Water Treatment Operators. The ABC conducts a job analysis of water treatment operators and the capabilities required to competently perform these job tasks. The results of this job analysis provide ABC with the foundation for the development of valid water treatment certification exams.

What is the Association of Boards of Certification?

The following is directly from the Association of Boards of Certification website:

“In 1972, water and wastewater industry leaders began conversations which developed the groundwork for an association to foster operator certification throughout North America. From those early discussions, the Association of Boards of Certification was born. Today, our Association includes almost 100 certifying authorities, representing more than 40 states, nine Canadian provinces as well as several international programs. These programs certify over 150,000 water and wastewater operators, laboratory analysis, plant maintenance technologists, biosolids land appliers and backflow prevention assembly testers.”
