Claude H. Dyal Water Treatment Plant, City of Cocoa

Tuesday, June 16, 2020 8:00 a.m. - Noon


The Dyal WTP maintains three different water sources: surface water, groundwater, and ASR wells. Each source requires separate, varying treatment trains that then combine together for a blended, finished water. The tour will explore the water sources, treatment trains, and how the City manages the treatment and distribution system with advanced automation.

To attend this tour, you will be required to email a photocopy of your Drivers License or passport by May 15, 2020. Long pants and closed-toe shoes required.

Potable Reuse Pilot, City of Altamonte Springs

Tuesday, June 16, 2020 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.


Continuing a long history of innovation in water reuse, this tour will focus on two of the City’s newest advancements: the pureALTA potable reuse pilot project and the AFIRST project. pureALTA's award-winning system utilizies a non-RO based treatment system composed of Ozone/BAF, UF, GAC, and UV/AOP. AFIRST captures stormwater from Interstate-4, then pumps and treats it to be blended with the city’s original 1990’s Project APRICOT reclaimed water system. AFIRST significantly decreased nutrient loading to a nearby river basin and allowed for increased reuse and groundwater recharge in an area with declining aquifer levels. You will see the stormwater catchment (also a City park) and the treatment system.

Beneficial Water Reuse - Water Conserv II

The City of Orlando and Orange County Utilities enjoy a 30-year collaboration on the Water Conserv II project, the largest beneficial reuse project of its kind in the world. A need to expand wastewater treatment service and a state requirement to eliminate discharge to surface waters resulted in this long-term partnership to develop an innovative reuse project. Engineering ingenuity, creativity, and state of the art technology irrigates up to 2,737 acres of citrus annually combining agricultural irrigation with aquifer recharge via rapid infiltration basing (RIBS).

Stanton Energy Plant, Orlando Utilities Commission

Stanton Energy Center is a modern, fuel-diverse, environmentally sound power-generation facility. Sources of fuel include coal, solar, and natural gas. Explore the four separately run control rooms: Power/energy; Brine plant; Coal yard; and air quality water treatment system. Orlando Utilities Commission is committed to sustainability and conserving energy, evident from its LEED certified administration center to recycling, reducing, and reusing materials.

Orlando Wetlands Park

Wednesday, June 17, 2020 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.


The Orlando Wetlands Park is a man-made wetland designed to provide advanced treatment for reclaimed water from the City of Orlando’s Iron Bridge Regional Water Reclamation Facility. Designed to treat up to 30 mgd of reclaimed water, the Park is one of the largest and longest operating systems of its kind to treat reclaimed water. The wetlands is also a public park that is popular for bird-watching. The tour will include a guided bus tour on berms around the wetland park with stops at observation areas. You will learn about the treatment system as well as the abundant wildlife at the park.

Surface Water Treatment Plant, Tampa Bay Water

As one of Florida’s largest Surface Water Treatment Plants, this state-of-the-art facility provides high-quality drinking water to the Tampa Bay region with a maximum plant capacity of 120mgd. The plant incorporates advanced technologies throughout the treatment process. In the first stage of treatment a patented ACTIFLO process is used to remove the color and particles from the water. The second stage includes ozone disinfection to kill microorganisms prior to entering the third stage, biologically active filtration, where “good bacteria” aid in removing remaining organic molecules.

Beyond the Spec Book: Learn What, How & When to Use Various Equipment in the Water Treatment Process

This workshop is for those relatively new to operations, engineering and the water industry. Eight manufacturers will set up their equipment at a station in the room. In groups of 3-5, attendees will visit each station and learn about the piece(s) of equipment, touch it, learn how to operate it, understand when to use it, and learn what each part of the equipment specification means in simple terms. Each group will visit every station during the workshop.
