This standard describes coating systems for coating and recoating the inside and outside surfaces of steel tanks used for potable water storage in water supply service. Coating systems for new bolted steel tanks are not described in this standard (see ANSI/AWWA D103). Major revisions made to the standard in this revision include the following: shop priming narrative has been updated (see Sec. 4.3.1.1 and 4.4.1.1.); preconstruction primer narrative has been updated (see Sec. 4.3.1.2 and 4.4.1.2.); outside coating system No. 3 (OCS-3) has been changed to represent a three-coat system consisting of zinc-rich primer and intermediate and finish coat of a single-component water-based industrial acrylic or modified acrylic emulsion (see Sec. 4.3.4.); a new outside coating system No. 7 (OCS-7) has been added that represents a three-coat system consisting of a first coat and an intermediate coat of two-component water-based epoxy and a finish coat of a two-component, water-based aliphatic polyurethane coating (see Sec. 4.3.8.); inside coating system No. 3 (ICS-3) has been changed to represent a one-coat or two-coat system, consisting of an optional two-component epoxy primer or inorganic or organic zinc-rich primer and a two-component epoxy topcoat, and the epoxy topcoat reflects a minimum volume solids content of 96 percent (see Sec. 4.4.4.); Appendix A commentary on spot repair of coatings versus full removal has been updated (see Sec. A.6.4.1.); Appendix A commentary on abrasive blast cleaning versus water jetting has been updated (see Sec. A.6.4.2.); Appendix A commentary on a stripe coat definition has been updated (see Sec. A.7.2.); Appendix A commentary on tank lettering, logos, and signage has been updated (see Sec. A.8.); a default checklist has been added as appendix C as a checklist of optional requirements that is intended to assist the user in specifying coating systems covered by this standard.
