This historical standard was first approved in September 1947 with the last revision approved June 1981. ANSI approved it in August 1981. Also provided is a history of the standard, a brief discussion of disinfecting water mains, major revisions and information on use of the standard. This standard presents the essential procedures for disinfecting new and repaired water mains. All new water mains shall be disinfected before they are placed in service. All water mains taken out of service for inspecting, repairing, or other activity which might lead to contamination of water shall be disinfected before they are returned to service. Included are sections on the following: references, affidavit of compliance, forms of chlorine disinfection, liquid chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, basic disinfection procedure, preventive and corrective methods during construction, keeping pipe clean and dry, joints, packing materials, sealing materials, cleaning and swabbing, wet-trench construction, flooding by storm or accident, methods of chlorination, tablet method, continuous feed method, slug method, final flushing, clearing the main of heavily chlorinated water, disposing of heavily chlorinated water, bacteriological tests, standard conditions, special conditions, sampling procedure, redisinfection, disinfection procedures when cutting into or repairing existing mains, trench treatment, swabbing with hypochlorite solution, flushing, slug chlorination, sampling, special procedures for caulked tapping sleeves.
