Drinking Water Week: Celebrate that water is “There When You Need It”

Drinking Water Week is fast approaching! It begins May 1, which is less than 30 days away.

Drinking Water Week 22First, a little background: Each year, AWWA and its members promote Drinking Water Week as a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role of water in our daily lives. This year’s theme, “There When You Need It,” underscores different aspects of the reliability of our drinking water. For example:

•    When we open the faucets in our homes, water streams out.
•    Tap water meets or exceeds quality standards established by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
•    An intricate maze – largely out of sight – of pipes, pumps and valves transports tap water from collection, through the treatment process and into homes for consumption.
•    Water professionals – everyday heroes during the pandemic – work tirelessly every day to ensure safe drinking water emerges when faucets are opened.

If you’re not sure how to celebrate, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

Recognizing Drinking Water Week is an ideal way to educate the public, connect with your community and promote employee morale. Too often, water utilities are in the spotlight only when something bad happens – a main break in the middle of rush hour or a rate increase. Don’t miss this opportunity to highlight the positive things associated with drinking water and water systems.

You can set up in-person or virtual community celebrations. Ideas include holding an Adopt-A-Hydrant program, burying a time capsule or planting a tree. To involve children, you can hold a coloring or poster contest using some of the AWWA materials available for free download.

WaterOne in Johnson City, Kansas, throws the Tower 2 Tower 5K as part of Drinking Water Week. Runners follow a course that loops between two local water towers. Proceeds go to Water for People, the global non-profit (established by AWWA in 1991) that helps bring clean water and sanitation solutions to communities. This year’s event is open to anyone, virtual runners included.

Make sure you’ve downloaded AWWA’s free 2022 Drinking Water Week materials for your Drinking Water Week celebration. These include logos, graphics, children's activities and social media posts.

Share your Drinking Water Week celebration with us on social media, using the hashtag #ThereWhenYouNeedIt.
