AWWA is passing along an industry alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency about Chinese-manufactured unmanned aircraft systems (drones). Utilizing unmanned aircraft systems, such as drones, to perform critical functions is increasing in popularity. These devices do present risks of which users should be aware. The devices, particularly those manufactured in China, can collect and transmit potentially harmful data about users' operations or the entities operating them. According to DHS, these risks include potential “data theft, espionage and other threats to sensitive information and data that should be considered before buying or using UAS.” Questions can be directed to Kevin Morley , AWWA’s federal relations manager.
