AWWA Member Spotlight -- Alice Chow, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Alice ChowJob title and employer: Civil Engineer, WSP in Canada

Education: B.Eng., Bioresource, and M.Sc., Integrated Water Resources Management, McGill University

When and why did you get involved in the water industry? As an undergraduate, I conducted a desktop study on providing potable water to Haiti after the 2010 Earthquake. It gave me perspective on fundamental issues around water and inspired me to pursue a master’s degree on the topic.

Members of AWWA's International CommitteeHow have you benefited from your AWWA involvement? I joined AWWA hoping to be more connected with the water industry, both regionally and at the organizational level. I’ve met many great people who devote their time and effort to making AWWA an impactful organization. By surrounding myself with people who care about the same causes, it inspires me to do more. And this unified energy makes AWWA the great association that it is. (Pictured from left, Chow, Tyler Nading and Rebecca Wheeler at AWWA's 2021 Council Summit)

As a member of AWWA’s International Council, what would you like other members to know about its purpose? The International Council is a hidden gem that connects AWWA to the globe. We share our knowledge through established education programs, and water professionals around the world share their experience from innovation to resilience.

Alice Chow sailingWhat unique contributions do you think YPs bring to AWWA? YPs are keen to get involved. They are ready to pitch ideas as they are still learning about what makes an innovative idea a feasible one.

Describe one of your personal interests: I started sailboat racing a few summers ago (pictured right). The chaos at the start line is exhilarating. I never imagined that I would one day care this much about the wind direction on any given day, and it frees me from my thoughts when I’m laser focused on sailing.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you? I recently served as a juror. Although it was a challenging experience, it was an honour to partake in this civil duty.
