How did you get involved with the water industry? In 1984, during a decline in the U.S. oil industry, I found myself in Denver, Colo., looking for work. I was hired at Denver Water in April 1985 as an engineering technician and was fortunate to work there for 15 years. I learned a lot about the water sector from leaders like John Bambei, Jr., who was one of my supervisors while I worked as a design engineer.

What is one of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on? I worked on a $1.67 billion transportation expansion project (T-REX) in the early 2000s shortly after I started my own consulting business providing wastewater collection and water distribution system assessments and operator certification training. My experience at Denver Water with industry-standard design requirements, and my established relationships with various Denver agencies, were great background for my role as public utilities coordinator. I was responsible for managing representatives from five engineering firms tasked with designing and coordinating the construction of all water, sanitary sewer, and storm water relocations along the course of the interstate project.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments? I am proud to have written a book published by AWWA, “Managing Water Main Breaks Field Guide.”  I developed a related workshop to help agencies better respond to customer needs by restoring water service in a timely manner. The book was created from my interest in training field operators responsible for repairing main breaks. It also addresses their counterparts focused on asset management who are challenged with capturing information on the breaks, prioritizing their pipelines for repair/replacement, and cost-effectively maintaining these vital system components.

How long have you been an AWWA member and how has it benefited you? I have been an AWWA member since 1987, when I joined the Distribution O & M Committee chaired by Kan Oberoi. Kan challenged me to bring value to our industry by being actively involved. AWWA provides a valuable network of information, industry knowledge and contacts that I’ve used throughout my career.

Family and outside interests: I am married with three grown daughters and three grandchildren. Outside of my profession, I am engaged in youth development activities, church-related efforts and hanging with my grandkids.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you? Some people may not know that I am a Christian minister. I enjoy providing natural and spiritual water to those in need.
