Abstract

This article discusses a technology for rehabilitating steel and concrete pipe called carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs). CFRP system design is described, and an example of using CFRP at Southwest Transmission Main in Maryland is provided in a sidebar. Another sidebar follows a step-by-step process of applying the CFRP fabric to the inside of sections of structurally deficient pipe. Advantages and disadvantages of using the trenchless CFRP technology are presented, along with ongoing AwwaRF research on the use of CFRP for the structural renewal of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP).
