AWWA’s volunteers on the Water Utility Council and staff in the Government Affairs Office take on a host of wide-ranging policy issues in Washington related to drinking water. We work with Congress on laws addressing water infrastructure finance, security, source protection and similar broad issues. Once legislation is enacted, it falls upon administration agencies or departments to develop and issue enabling regulations.
The WUC determines AWWA’s stance on federal issues and sets the agenda for the Government Affairs staff, who advocate AWWA positions on a day-to-day and longer-term basis from lawmaking through rulemaking. Individual staff members have specific issues they focus on, but work with one another on cross-cutting issues and concerns.
