Turkey on Tap

Return to most recent posts

As you prepare your Thanksgiving Day meal this week, try to imagine doing so without tap water flowing from that kitchen faucet.

It’s a pretty illuminating exercise, because you can’t get too far. We need tap water to rinse off the turkey and protect us from germs. You have to wash the vegetables. There’s water required for virtually every side dish, from the cranberries to the pumpkin pie. Each place-setting will need a tall glass of ice water.

Of course, tap water also is needed to clean out the wine glasses and wipe down the counters. And, well, there is the matter of the toilets, which will be employed by approximately 30 million Americans at halftime of the second game.

In the United States alone, we use about 40 billion gallons of tap water a day. Why not consider a few conservation tips this Thanksgiving?

Tips for Thanksgiving Day Water Conservation

  • Clean vegetables in a sink or pan partially filled with water rather than running water from the tap.
  • If you wash dishes by hand, rinse them in a sink partially filled with clean water instead of under running water.
  • Cut down on the amount of rinsing you do before loading the dishwasher. Most modern dishwashers do an excellent job of cleaning dishes, pots and pans all by themselves.
  • Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator instead of running it under tap water.

Most of all, this Thanksgiving, remember to be thankful for tap water!
