Distribution System Guidance in Development
In January 2007, the Water Research Foundation (formerly AwwaRF) Board approved funding for the research project: Criteria for Optimized Distribution Systems. The project was proposed and co-funded by the Partnership for Safe Water and supported by many utility members. The project consisted of developing criteria, assessments and tools for optimization of drinking water distribution systems. The Request for Proposals was issued in March 2007. In September 2007, Melinda Friedman of Confluence Engineering Group, LLC (formerly of HDR Engineering, Inc.) was selected as the principal investigator.
The project had three main objectives:
- Develop distribution optimization criteria
- Develop procedures for utility self-assessment using these criteria
- Prepare software tools.
Bill Lauer, Partnership Program Manager is collaborating with a working committee of expert volunteers to develop a self-assessment guide for distribution system optimization. The guide will be similar to the one now used to optimize water treatment plants. Completion is scheduled for September 30, 2010. If you are interested in volunteering to serve on the review committee, please contact Debby Qualls at dqualls@awwa.org for more information.
A timeline of the project, including background information and a completion schedule is available.

Self-Assessment Template
A Self-Assessment Template has been developed by PA DEP to assist utilities in completing their Phase III self-assessments.
