Volunteers = AWWA's engine

AWWA is seeking volunteers for councils, divisions and committees to meet the challenges facing the water industry in the years ahead.

Staffed by volunteers, these groups are the workhorses behind all that AWWA does ― determining the standards, writing the policy statements and manuals, deciding on the workshops and presentations at the conferences and seminars.

Thousands of AWWA members already support their profession and the association through service on these volunteer groups, and many never leave their offices to do it, participating via e-mails and teleconferencing. In return, they expand their professional network around the country and grow in expertise. Young professionals benefit, in particular.

In addition to standards and technical committees, there are opportunities to serve on councils, divisions and administrative committees. Listed below are the number of openings beside the group names and the number of members eligible for reappointment in parentheses.

Membership on those groups is by appointment only, and a formal process is followed. Those appointments become effective after the AWWA annual conference in Chicago, June 20 - 24.

AWWA members interested in seeking an appointment to a council or division may send the application form available online via e-mail or letter to AWWA, 6666 W. Quincy Ave., Denver, CO 80235-3098.

Sometimes new committees are formed and will need volunteers. Technical and Educational Council committees range in size from five to 75, and many have few restrictions on membership qualifications. The standards committees are restricted to equal membership from utilities and manufacturers.

To find out more about serving on a committee, AWWA members can review the information at the volunteer section of the Web site or contact the AWWA staff member whose name and hyperlinked e-mail address are listed beside that committee. Full descriptions of the committee scope are available online.
