FEATURE ARTICLES

Portable pressure wave-maker for leak detection and pipe system characterization
Bruno Brunone, Marco Ferrante, and Silvia Meniconi
Transient test-based campaigns for leak detection in pipe systems are attractive because they are quick and inexpensive. However, there is a need for a portable and easy-to-use device that is not overly complicated.

Plant conversion experience: Ozone BAC process installation and disinfectant residual control
Saurabh Marda, Doo-Il Kim, Myung-Jong Kim, John Gordy, Skip Pierpont, Jim Gianatasio, Appiah Amirtharajah, and Jae-Hong Kim
How one treatment facility addressed the problem of low monochloramine formation efficiency and rapid decay of monochloramine residual in its treated waters after modifying its treatment process is described here.

Legionella reduction after conversion to monochloramine for residual disinfection
June M. Weintraub, Brendan Flannery, Duc J. Vugia, Lisa B. Gelling, James J. Salerno, Michael J. Conroy, Valerie A. Stevens, Charles E. Rose, Richard E. Besser, Barry S. Fields, and Matthew R. Moore
A two-year, prospective environmental study—the first to investigate the occurrence of Legionella in nonhospital settings—was conducted to determine whether converting from chlorine to monochloramine for disinfection would decrease Legionella colonization of hot water systems.

Effects of water treatment residual addition on phosphorus in liquid dairy manure
Donald W. Meals, James Fay, and Michael Barsotti
Results of this pilot study showed the effectiveness of applying dried water treatment residual to liquid dairy manure to reduce phosphorus runoff and its negative environmental impact.

Iron oxide–coated fibrous sorbents for arsenic removal
Arun Kumar, Patrick L. Gurian, Robin H. Bucciarelli-Tieger, and Jade Mitchell-Blackwood
Putting an iron–oxide coating on inexpensive materials such as fiberglass and cellulose could lead to developing a low-cost method for removing arsenic and assist smaller utilities in meeting new contaminant level requirements. An Appendix containing additional tables not included in the print version is amended at the end of this article to further illustrate the material discussed here.
