Elementary School Activities
Grades K-2- Illustrate the water cycle. Use a poster, or a felt board and felt pieces to show the sun, clouds, rain, snow, a lake, groundwater, and the ocean. Tell the group where their water comes from.
- Solicit participation. Ask kids to tell you why water is important and how we use water.
- Explain how each student can help conserve and protect water.
- Distribute take-home materials to the students such as the AWWA Splash Activity Book.
Grades 3-4- Ask the group what they know about water. Use slides, overheads or posters to address how much water is on the earth, how much is available to drink, the forms of water (solid, liquid, and gas), and where their water comes from.
- Explain how each student can help conserve and protect water. Stress that water-saving habits will help us use the water we have wisely.
- Solicit participation. Ask students how they can show they are helping save water.
- Provide handouts such as AWWA's Story of Drinking Water.
Grades 5-6- Ask the group what they know about water. Use slides, overheads or posters to address how much water is on the earth, how much is available to drink, how water becomes polluted, and where their water comes from.
- Discuss what actions can pollute water and make it harder to clean. Bring examples of household items that can pollute water.
- Allow the students a selection of handouts to take home.
