Section Request for AWWA Copyright PermissionA copyright is a form of protection for original published and unpublished works of authorship in areas such as literary, music, dramatic, etc. The owner of a copyright is then given the right, or to authorize the right, to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, etc., the original work. Sections interested in using AWWA materials in section newsletters, educational programs, etc. need to submit a written request for copyright permission to the AWWA Publishing Group. The standard form and instructions for requesting AWWA copyright permission is attached. The reason for requiring a written request is not to limit the use of materials, but rather to verify that AWWA own all rights to the materials and, therefore, can legally grant copyright permission to another party. There are cases where we have been given rights for one-time publication (e.g., photos in an article) and, thus, cannot grant copyright permission for those materials. The requester would be referred to the actual owner of the copyright, which is typically a company or individual other than the author. Requiring written copyright request is a step we must require in order to comply with the U.S. Copyright laws, protect the Association legally, and protect our intellectual property. If you have any questions about use of AWWA material, please contact your Section Services Representative. InstructionsTo request permission to reproduce any copyrighted materials from the American Water Works Association (in printed or electronic medium), submit in writing the following information: A description of the materials to be duplicated -- article title, page numbers, figure numbers, etc. The source of the materials to be reproduced -- title of work, volume number, issue number, Web site, copyright date. The purpose for which the materials are to be used and the audience -- inclusion in a new publication, marketing packet for potential clients, classroom materials, Web site, etc. The quantity to be reproduced. The above information should be directed to Copyright Permissions, American Water Works Association, 6666 W. Quincy Ave., Denver, Colorado 80235; fax (303) 794-7310. A written response either granting or denying the copyright request will be forwarded as soon as possible (typically in two to three days). If granted, the response will include the proper citation to be used when crediting AWWA. |
