Bylaws Change

General Procedure

Section bylaws can be revised any time there is a need for change. A section should review its bylaws at least every five years. The purpose of the bylaws is to provide the section with a source of guidance, and this guidance can and should change to reflect the procedural preference and development of the section.

Following are five steps that are taken when sections amend their bylaws:

  1. The section prepares draft revisions.
  2. The draft revisions are sent to your section services representative for review.
  3. The revisions are presented to the section membership for approval.
  4. The revisions are presented to the APC.
  5. Approval by the AWWA Board of Directors is obtained.

(Steps 3 and 4 are interchangeable.)

A "How-to" guide on amending section bylaws gives greater detail on this process. A model "Standard Bylaws for AWWA Sections" has been developed which can be used by sections as a guide. Contact your section services representative to request a copy of either the "How-to" guide or bylaws model, or access them on our web site at www.awwa.org/sections/manual/man4.htm.
